https://www.fi.edu/science-recipes/thaumatropes Your next project is going to be a little different--both in execution and submission. You are going to design and then construct a Thaumatrope.  A Thaumatrope is an optical toy that relies on the principle of Persistence of Vision. Persistence of Vision  is the phenomenon of the eye by which an afterimage is thought to persist for approximately one twenty-fifth of a second on the retina. Persistence of Vision is why movies and animation appear to move even though what you are actually seeing is a series of still images. This link takes you to a great historical examination of Thaumatropes: https://graphicarts.princeton.edu/2013/10/28/thaumatrope/ For an interesting example of Persistence of Vision, watch the video linked to below: https://www.exploratorium.edu/snacks/magic-wand Place a prepoderence of your energy on devising a creative solution...that means no birds-in-cages, fish-in-fishbowls, or anyt...

6th Project, 4th Quarter "Murals"

Image
Murals The word Mural originates from the Latin word “murus”, meaning  wall . Today, we can define mural art as any piece of artwork painted or applied directly onto a wall, ceiling or other larger permanent surface. Your challenge is to apply a conceptually relevant mural to an image of a building.   1) Read the short article about murals in the 1st Link below. 2) Examine a few links to mural-centric web pages (next 4 Links below or do your own research). 3) Find and download a copy-right free, high-resolution of a building. (Probably one with a big blank space on it somewhere). 4) Closely examine the building, the style of architecture and the neighborhood. Conceptualize what kind of image would work with the "canvas" you've selected. Look for visual tie-ins that will inform your concept. 5) Find or create the mural image and *apply it to the building using the digital tools you have available to you. https://www.widewalls.ch/wha...

Project 5, 4th Quarter "Messaging Part 2"

Image
For Part 1 of the Messaging Project, you examined a variety of messaging types and assessed what type of message is most effective with various population groups. For Part 2, you probably won't be surprised to learn that you are going to create an original message that revolves around our current state of affairs in dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic. You will pick one style of messaging: 1) Personal Hygiene 2) Physical Distancing 3) Know the Symptoms 4) Myth-Busting 5) Spread Kindness 6) Solidarity And select 1 population group: 1) Elderly 2) High Schools students 3) Parents 4) Unicorns 5) Rick Astley 6) You decide Here is an example that I put together with my son: I know that some of you are struggling a little with the Pixlr program. At this point, you are welcome to use any program you can find or have available to you, but don't get too hung up on the slickness of your design. What I'm looking for is the IDEA ...

Project 3, 4th Quarter "Fantasy Workspace"

Image
Fantasy Workspace Here's mine With our current  Social Distancing  situation, we have all had to carve out a workspace from which to attend virtual school. Since my wife also works in Education and my son is in 8th grade, we are spread throughout the house...my wife is conducting business in the den, my son is attending virtual school in the playroom and I am set up on the dining room table.  All very doable and we are thankful we can work from home and have access to a house laden with technology that allows us each to work on our own device.  That, unfortunately, is not the situation for everyone. All across the District, from students to parents to employees, people are struggling to find a place to work and the appropriate technology to work on. Even in our situation, things aren't ideal. So much demand on the Internet causes our wifi to glitch out regularly, my Creative Cloud subscription got corrupted so I can't use my desktop Mac with the ...

Project 2, 4th Quarter "Ovoids"

Image
Non-Denominational, Spring Ovoids That Just Might Be Appropriate  For The Mid-April Holiday Of Your Choice https://www.vecteezy.com/vector-art/144933-traditional-patterned-easter-eggs-vectors We will continue this week with another Pixlr-based Project intended to enhance your familiarization with Pixlr and the Pixlr workspace. Your challenge will be to *(convincingly) apply an image/pattern/design to ovoid shapes.  For the purposes of demonstration eggs are employed, but you could use any ovoid shape--a football, or um, a rugby ball, or, OK, I'm stumped.  Make it easy on yourself and use an image of eggs.   You may use the image below: You can also find a different copy-right free image online or, if you are ambitious (or hungry) create your own image. In any event, you will need a picture of at least 3 eggs. The Project can be completed in Photoshop as well as Pixlr, but if you are going to use PS, you will want ...
